“The Little Green Fields” painted in 1945 by Gerard Dillon, with its drystone field enclosures framing characteristics of traditional culture, captures a spirit of collective life which is pertinent to school buildings.

These enclosures still exist too around the Kingswood locale, and are re-interpreted to organise site and building. The existing ditch and hedge is retained to define principal zones of the site, whilst new enclosures add definition to internal and external activity spaces, and define key circulation routes, critically three principal parallel lanes leading through the school linking levels and spaces.

This idea of “fields” linked by “lanes” could moreover be extended to formulate a masterplan for Kingswood neighbourhood centre to give it a sense of collective whole. Competition 2012.
