A range of teaching and ancillary spaces are provided on two floors. Social and study areas face south west through large windows onto a sheltered sunlit courtyard. Use is made of reflected and borrowed light, roofspaces are open below the shallow pitch, and a rooflight punches daylight into the heart of the building through a first floor void.
Raised above the surrounding ground level, materials are alternated in a composition which reflects the internal organisation. A plinth of drystone walling anchors the scheme to the ground and defines its site territory. A varied palette of materials is entirely appropriate to Charlton Kings, which lies at the city / cotswold fringe. 1230m2. PC 1998.
Following this a succession of projects were executed for Balcarras complementing the schools success. These projects demonstrate continuity in client relationships, clarity in working around an open school environment, and are characterised by contemporary design with local materials and imaginative uses of natural daylight.
